Weight Watchers has done a makeover on its signature points system to encourage dieters to eat more fruits and vegetables.
The PointsPlus program, announced Monday, gives most vegetables and fresh fruits zero points, while dried fruits and vegetables high in starches such as potatoes will still be assigned points.
The new plan is meant to help dieters make better choices about what they eat, the company said, buy favoring foods that require more energy to process, are more filling, and natural rather than processed.
“Our new PointsPlus program is based on the latest scientific research and is designed to guide people to foods that are nutrient dense and highly satisfying, ensuring they will make healthful decisions, have successful weight loss and learn to keep their weight off long-term,” said Karen Miller-Kovach, the chief scientific officer at Weight Watchers International Inc.
“Research shows that after following the Weight Watchers program, we’ve seen improvements in healthy eating habits, successful weight loss and even changes in peoples’ innate response to hunger and food – ultimately aiding in long-term weight loss success,” she added.
The program still sticks with the basic dieting method of counting calories, but PointsPlus adds distinctions for what makes up those calories, whether they are from fat, fiber, protein or carbohydrates.
The new dieting program launched Sunday at Weight Watchers meetings around the U.S. and on Monday, the program was added to the Weight Watchers online subscription plan. The company said it hold nearly 50,000 meetings every week.
