VIZIO Unveils New Via Smartphone and High-Resolution Tablet PC.
Vizio Inc., a leading manufacturer of flat-screen televisions, is set to reveal a smartphone and tablet computer at the upcoming Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
The new products continue Vizio’s expansion into other areas of consumer electronics. The company is mostly known as a maker of low-cost television sets that retail for as low as $200 or more than $3,000, usually less than comparable models made by Sony Corp., Samsung , Panasonic and other companies.
Vizio, based in Irvine, Calif., sells it TVs through major retailers like Costco Wholesale Corp, Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and Target Corp.
Retail prices for the company’s smartphone and tablet have not been announced, but Vizio is expected to use the same low-cost alternative strategy for the tablet and phone, which are expected to go by the same VIA.
The products appeared in commercial during Sunday’s Rose Bowl football games. Tablet computers are expected to be a big focus of the Consumer Electronics Show, and Vizio’s discounted version could lead to a series of price reductions from other manufacturers, such as Apple.
The VIA phone is expected to feature a 4-inch screen and a camera for video, pictures and video calls. The tablet is set to have a high-resolution 8-inch screen and have Wi-Fi connectivity but no cellular connection.
Both the phone and tablet are expected to run on Google’s Android mobile operating system.
To enhance the HD viewing experience both the Vizio smartphone and tablet will have HD video playbacks with a universal remote app.
Chief Technology Officer at VIZIO, Matthew McRae stated; “Whether consumers are looking to enjoy content on the big screen, on their tablet or on a mobile phone, VIA Plus delivers on the promise of Entertainment Freedom for All by creating a rich and consistent user experience across all devices that’s accessible to everyone, from the power user to the casual browser.” He went on to say they are both extensions of the High Definition entertainment experience that consumers enjoy when viewing TV or playing video games. The VIA phone and tablet pc are an extension of the VIA Plus ecosystem.
The new products come as newer television sales appear to be dwindling in the United States. One-estimate points to 2010 as the first year that sales LCD TVs have fallen since the television enter the mainstream five years ago.
