United Nations Leaders Intend to Save Mothers and Children

United Nations flagsUnited Nations Chief Ki-Moon presented the keynote address to the General Assembly’s Ministerial Meeting. He cautioned the leaders of increasing political schisms and social inequalities. He urged U. N. members to demonstrate greater tolerance and mutual reverence in order to bring the world together. Prior to the meeting, a three-day summit was held to support attainment of the U. N.’s anti-poverty objectives by 2015.

General Ban Ki-Moon announced during the summit a global campaign intended to save millions of children and their mother’s over the next five years. The crusade garnered more than $40 billion in pledges from private aid groups and world governments. Moon believes investing in the future of mother’s and children builds firm, diplomatic and productive societies.

He told the kings, presidents, and prime ministers, “We hear the language of hate, false divisions between `them’ and `us,’ those who insist on `their way’ or `no way,’” he said. He lamented saying, “today, we are being tested.”

The Global Strategy for Women’s and Children’s Health includes reducing severe poverty by half, making certain primary education is available worldwide, reversing and eventually bringing to a halt the HIV/AIDS pandemic, and reducing maternal and child mortality

During the summit, President Obama reiterated the words of United Nations Chief Ki-Moon. His speech, which called for peaceful intentions by all nations represented, well exceeded the fifteen minutes allotted.

He addressed the religious divides and hatreds of old that are separating the world. According to Obama, although the world has grown more interconnected, somehow, we have grown further apart and the U. N. has no control.
