Republicans in the US House voted to stop an extension of jobless benefits and worked to cut funds from government going to National Public Radio.
On Thursday, the two moves were indicative of past GOP tactics. Republicans have long pushed to have any extension of unemployment benefits covered by cuts to government spending.
“This couldn’t come at a worse time,” said Rep. Chellie Pingree, D- Maine, in explaining why unemployment benefits should be expanded. “Although our economy has shown some signs of improving, far, far too many people are still unable to find a job.”
Two million Americans will exhaust their unemployment benefits on November 30. Democrats had hoped to extend the program through the holidays to February, when another two million people are set to see their benefits expire.
Republicans were against using emergency funding to pay for $12.5 billion extension. They proposed having the benefits paid for by taking money from economic stimulus programs or other sources.
Eleven Democrats joined 143 Republicans in voting no. The 258-154 vote fell short of the two-thirds majority needed to pass the bill.
Republicans said that by fast-tracking the measure, Democrats were ignoring the calls for spending cuts made in the election.
“Are you even listening to the American people,” said Rep. Charles Boustany Jr. R- La.
Cutting funding to NPR was the top result in an online vote for the Republican’s “YouCut” campaign. The news organization has long been criticized the right for perceived liberal bias. The criticism escalated recently after NPR fired Juan Williams after he made comments about being scared of some Muslims flying on airplanes.
