The first electronic devices with built-in connectivity to the new high-speed wireless data network from Verizon Wireless are a tablet and smartphone from Motorola Mobility Inc. designed to be used for videoconferencing.
More consumer electronics for the 4G network from Verizon were unveiled during the International Consumer Electronics Show, which opened last week in Las Vegas. The high-speed Verizon network went live for laptops last month.
The network is the fastest in the U.S., and Verizon hopes to take advantage of that speed by offering customers smartphones and tablet computers that will collect and send large amounts of data. It is also expected, although not confirmed, that Verizon will begin offering Apple’s iPhone to customers later this year, ending AT&T’s lock on the iPhone.
The Xoom tablet from Motorola features a 10.1-inch screen and two cameras, one facing the user for video conferencing and another capable of producing high-definition videos. The tablet will be available to consumers sometime in the first quarter. It will initially work on Verizon’s 3G network, but can be upgraded to the faster 4G network sometime in the second quarter.
Like the Xoom, the Droid Bionic smartphone will also feature two cameras. It will also be one of the first phones equipped with a “dual-core processor” that will more or less double the phone’s computing power. The availability date for the Droid Bionic has not been announced.
Motorola Mobility is the new cell phone manufacturer created last week when Motorola Inc. split into two companies. The other side is focusing on business needs.
