Kanye West and Taylor Swift debacle at 2009 MTV VMAs
During the 2009 awards, as Swift graciously accepted her award, West bolted onto stage and said into the microphone, “Beyonce had one of the best videos of all time!” The comment left Swift stunned and the audience in shock.
The backlash from the interruption was brutal, beginning with Swift’s mother and Beyonce herself. Taylor Swift had said very little after her initial statement of “I was standing on the stage and I was really excited because I had just won the award, then I was really excited because Kanye West was on the stage. And then I wasn’t so excited anymore after that,” until this year’s VMAs. West apologized profusely and publically to Swift and her mother for his outburst.
Swift accepted his apology and refused to comment further. Earlier in the year sources revealed that Swift wrote a song about the incident, and MTV agreed to let her sing it during this year’s show. The song is featured on Swift’s forthcoming album “Speak Now”. Undeniably, the song had lyrics that were directed toward West. However, the song was not what many expected.
The song was expected to be a rebuttal full of fireworks, instead the song brought about a smooth forgiving resolution. Lyrics like, “it’s ok, life is a tough crowd, 32 and still growing up now, who you are is not what you did.” What Swift did not say, is Kanye West took care of himself in a song he wrote as another means of apologizing to Taylor Swift.
