The San Francisco Giants are getting their parade Wednesday.
To honor the team for winning the 2010 World Series and to give the city a chance to celebrate publicly, a parade will snake through the city, which has been home to the Giants since 1958 when they relocated from New York City.
The long dry spell of not having a World Series champion in San Francisco came to an end Monday night when the Giants beat the Texas Rangers in the final game of the series.
The parade will run from the city’s Financial District to Civic Center Plaza and begin at 11 a.m. The parade will start at the intersection of Montgomery and Washington streets and then continue down Market Street for six blocks. The entire parade will stop in front of San Francisco City Hall where Mayor Gavin Newson will present the team with the key to the city.
City officials expected large crowds to fill the parade route. On Monday night, thousands of fans assembled outside City Hall to watch the final game of the series on a big screen TV. The Giants had finally taken the World Series title that had slipped from their fingers in 1962, 1989 and 2002.
Long lines of people formed at the Giants Dugout store not far from AT&T Park and street vendors were selling Giants merchandise throughout the city’s downtown.
“I just want to be part of the happiness here,” said Ofelia Guiriba, a Pacifica resident.
The Giants were back in San Francisco late Monday night and had one day to rest up before a day of celebrating with the fans of San Francisco. They beat the ranges in five games.
