Heisman Trophy winner Reggie Bush may soon be stripped of the much coveted honor. Bush was awarded the Heisman Trophy in 2005, beating out Titans quarterback Vince Young.
The University of Southern California made an announcement in July that the university had removed its copy of Bush’s trophy from Heritage hall. The announcement continued to say that under the terms of NCAA sanctions the university must disassociate with Reggie Bush and return the Heisman Trophy to the Heisman Trust.
The actions of USC were prompted by key violations found by the NCAA related to USC’s football program. Bush was accused of receiving money and other benefits during his enrollment and participation in the USC’s football program.
In response to the violations, the NCAA imposed severe sanctions against the university back in June. The sanctions consisted of loss of scholarships and a ban of two years from participation in any of the college bowls.
Bush refused detail any of the communications he has had with Heisman Trust or what he has learned about the fate of his 2005 Heisman Trophy. He did give this statement to reporters after practice with the New Orleans Saints, “At this point, it’s kind of out of my hands,” he also said he could not “confirm or deny” any meetings with the Heisman Trophy Trust.
Robert Whalen Executive Director for the Heisman Trust told the Associated Press no has decision has been made on the status of the 2005 Heisman.
Being stripped of the Heisman could tarnish Reggie Bush’s legacy, but Bush pointed out during an interview, “On the field, play speaks for itself.” Considering he and his fellow New Orleans Saints are sporting the 2010 Super Bowl Ring, his talent does speak for itself.
