DXM is found in Robotussin gel capsules
The Consumer Healthcare Products Association praised the US Food and Drug Administration advisory panel for voting against prescription requirements for the drug dextromethorphan.
Dextromthorphan or DXM is a main ingredient in over the counter medicines such as Nyquil, Robitussin, and Tylenol Cold, which grace over 40 million American households a year.
The Drug Enforcement Administration proposed the investigation and asked the government to help crack down on the abuse of the drug by teenagers.
Ingestion of DXM in large amounts and sometimes when combined with other drugs, can create a sense of “Robotrippin” or euphoria. Robotrippin, a name given by teens, is a way for the youth to get high in a very inexpensive way. The abuse of this drug mixed with other over the counter medicines like acetaminophens can cause side effects such as liver damage or even death.
In 2008, Dextromthorphan was accountable for over 7,998 emergency room visits, a considerably large increase from 4,634 in 2004. The Consumer Healthcare Products Associations testified to the panel stating that to make the drug “by prescription request” would only put a strain on patients by making the drug difficult to obtain. They also argued requiring a prescription would place greater stress on the healthcare system as consumers would have to request doctor visits for an over the counter drug.
The proposal against, was voted 15-9 to require a doctor’s note for the drug. The USFDA and the Drug Enforcement Administration has consented to find a way to restrict the drug to teens. Congress could possibly step into this argument and move the sale of this product to consumers over the age of 18.
