Miss Mexico Jimena Navarrete Rosete is the new Miss Universe. The 59th Miss Universe pageant was held in Las Vegas, Nevada, at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino on August 23. Miss Philippines, Miss Australia, Miss Ukraine and Miss Jamaica were runners-up.
Jimena Navarrete Rosete competed against eighty-three countries for the Miss Universe title. She faced strong competition from Miss Philippines, Venus Raj, in the finals. Raj was the favorite to win the title. She returned a hazy answer to one of the panels’ questions and this made her lose some valuable points in the crucial stage of the competition.
Miss USA Rime Fakih could have become America’s Sweetheart after a gap of 13 years if she had won the title last night. Similarly, she was the first Muslim girl to have won the Miss USA title. Unfortunately, she did not even get to the semi-final. She had firm views on the news of the “Mosque near Ground Zero” and the issue was clearly her undoing.
Jimena Navarrete was on February 22, 1988 in Guadalajara, Mexico. Prior to her participation in beauty pageants, she studied nutrition. Navarrete has become the second contestant to win the Miss Universe title from Mexico. The former was Miss Karla Carrillo. Winning the Nuestra Belleza Jalisco and the Nuestra Belleza México are her other crowning moments.
The Miss Universe crown prize comes with a luxury living space in New York, an undisclosed salary and the opportunity to serve the less privileged of the world.
