Biomedical research is complex. The rate of progress can be a frustratingly long and drawn out process, if you are among people suffering like actor Michael J. Fox. He said last month was good news for chronic disease research.
Last month two historic announcements came regarding embryonic stem cell research. The first announcement was the discovery of an Alzheimer’s biological marker found in spinal fluid. Earlier diagnosis and a better quality of life are achievable in patients with some level of memory loss.
The controversy with embryonic stem cell research has long since been an issue among voters, politicians, religious groups and those suffering at the mercy of chronic diseases.
Following the breakthrough biomarker announcement, S. Chief District Judge Royce Lamberth rejected an appeal by the Obama administration to rescind the temporary injunction he had ordered denying embryonic stem cell researchers access to federal funding.
On August 23, Judge Lamberth suspended federal funding for programs using embryonic stem cells. His decision resulted from a case presented by two researchers who used alternate cells in their research.
