Garmin Ltd., a forerunner in satellite communication solutions has recalled over a million of its Nüvi brand personal navigational devices. The GPS devices contain defective batteries that could possibly become overheated and cause fires, according to the company’s spokesman. An estimated 796,000 of the devices sold were sold in the United States.

Reportedly the company has received less than 10 reports involving the recalled Nüvi models. No property damage of injuries have been reported as of yet, but officials of Garmin said they made the decision to recall the systems as a precautionary measure.

Garmin designs products that provide ease of navigation including automotive, aviation, marine, fitness, outdoor recreation and wireless applications.

The models recalled contain the model numbers 200W, 250W, 260W, 7xx and 7xxT, xx is any two-digit number. According to Garmin, these units are pre-programmed with premium features including 3-D building view, photo navigation, faster screen redraw, route planning, emergency and car locators and much more.

Consumers should not remove or service the battery, but should return the unit directly to a Garmin-authorized facility. Visit www.garmin.com/nuvibatterypcbrecall to determine if their unit is apart of the recall.

Once on the website simply enter the serial number of the Nüvi. If the unit has the matching battery and PCB design within the specified date range, instructions will be provided for returns and replacements at no charge.
