Health organizations have already prepared themselves for flu season and are encouraging Americans to take advantage of the current stock available. Certain drug stores are even offering the vaccinations in combination with school supplies.
Dr. Anne Schuchat of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said, “Influenza is serious, and anyone, including healthy people, can get the flu and spread the flu.” She also added, “Flu vaccines are the best way to protect yourself and those around you.”
As the temperatures remain close to 100 degrees in some parts of the country, the flu is far from the minds of most people. Nevertheless, flu-shot season is upon us and health officials are strongly urging everyone to be vaccinated now. By receiving early vaccinations, the vaccine will have time to begin protecting the body before the flu season begins.
Young children, the elderly and pregnant women are strongly urged to be vaccinated as early as possible. This year the flu vaccination has the H1N1 strain vaccination included. Just one year ago the H1N1 or commonly called “swine flu” dominated headlines with its debilitating symptoms and even deaths. In addition to flu shots, the nasal vaccine or flu mist is also available and includes the H1N1 strain as well.
Unlike in past years, all Americans are advised to get the flu vaccination. However, even with the vaccination, everyone should take extra precautions to protect themselves and their families. As always to prevent the spread of the flu, good hand washing techniques, routinely disinfect surroundings.
