The 24th Annual Dragon*Con dominated the downtown area of Atlanta with components of the conference at the Hyatt Regency Atlanta, Marriott Marquis Atlanta, the Hilton Atlanta and the Sheraton Hotel Atlanta.

This year’s pop culture convention brought an excess of 40,000 Dragon*Con artists, dealers, exhibitors, fans, guests, and volunteers from all over the world. Ed Kramer, the founder of Dragon*Con spoke modestly about the conventions humble beginnings in an interview, “What started out as a project of a local science fiction group and gaming group, has now become one of the largest multi-genre conventions in North America.”

Major events included the infamous robot battles, the Guinness World Record Attempt and the DNA in Forensic Crime Investigation. The forensic event was hands-on and featured the same technology fans of CSI watch weekly. Another facet of the event was celebrity panels that featured cast members from some of the most memorable science fiction and fantasy series of all time. Casts were present from I Dream of Jeanie, Eureka, Firefly, Battlestar Galatica and Quantum Leap.

The highlight of the convention was the Annual Parade on Saturday down Peachtree Street. The parade provided an opportunity for science fiction and comic book enthusiast to model their elaborate character costumes. The costumes included Ghostbusters, Klingons, Harry Potter, and superheroes. The parade concluded with a Star Wars Theme. A throng of Jedi Knights, Storm Troopers, Princess Leias and Darth Vaders waved to crowds as they cheered.

Partial proceeds this year will be donated to the Lupus Foundation.
