November is National Diabetes Awareness Month and more Americans are struggling with diabetes as recent studies find 24 million Americans struggle with the disease.
Allsup, a Social Security and Medicare services provider is reminding America about the disease along with the people diagnosed with endocrine, nutritional and other metabolic diseases to take care of themselves.
It is important to withstand alcohol and exercise regularly. Most often, newly diagnosed diabetics forget to check glucose levels and eat better meals.
A recent study found that hospitalizations for diabetes in the United States rose 65 percent from 1993 to 2006.
“Despite its prevalence, public awareness about diabetes is very low,” said Allsup disability claims manager Cindy Ratermann. According to the National Diabetes Education Program, nearly six million people who have the disease do not even know it.
A high level of blood glucose that occurs during insulin production is the cause of diabetes. The body’s energy uses insulin from use glucose. With type 2 diabetes, either the body does not produce an adequate amount of insulin or the blood cells ignore it.
Diabetes sometimes overcomes individuals, forcing them to be unable to work or provide a normal way of life. This places financial pressures along with the challenges of managing the disease. Allsup’s survey revealed that a majority individuals applying for social security and disability (SSDI) experienced financial problems, emotional stress and their wellbeing declined while waiting for benefits. Applicants can wait months before receiving benefts.
“We work with people with diabetes every day to help them through what can be a very stressful process,” Ratermann said.
