Allegra Goes Over the Counter, FDA Approved

FDA has approved Allegra to be sold over the counter for children over the age of two and adults. Allegra is used to treat the allergies and chronic hives in children and adults.

Allegra will be purchasable by people suffering from allergies without a prescription starting this spring. Decongestants containing Allegra-D, also approved by the FDA, will be available without any prescription. All the drug in Allegra family like Allegra 12-Hour and 24-Hour Tablets for children ages 12 and older and adults, orally disintegrating children’s Allegra 12-Hour tablet for age 6 and older, Allegra liquid for children age 2 and older and many more will be available without any doctor’s prescription claims Sanofi-Aventis U.S. and its Consumer Healthcare division.

Over 40 million people in U.S. suffer from several allergies in a year. Allegra provides quick relief to all the symptoms without any particular side-effects. Eli Meltzer, MD, Co-director Allergy & Asthma Medical Group and Research said, “As an allergist, I’m often addressing my patients’ concerns about treating their allergy symptoms with a medicine that can relieve their symptoms quickly and doesn’t make them tired or groggy.” Allegra products will provide the same relief to patients as it has been providing for many years now, claims Mr. Meltzer.

The president of global operation of Sanofi-Aventis, Mr. Spek said, “Leveraging our U.S. Consumer Healthcare platform to convert prescription medicines to OTC products is a key growth driver for Sanofi-Aventis to become a diversified healthcare company also in the United States”. The chief executive officer Mr. Guerry felt that Allegra is the most preferred allergy treatment drug and was pleased that it is now available to the consumers without any prescription.
