The newest class of inductees into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame includes old-school rocker Alice Cooper and the rough-sounding singer Tom Waits.
The announcement of the new class came Wednesday. Other performers set to enter the hall of fame March 14 are Neil Diamond, Darlene Love, and Dr. John.
“We are pleased to welcome these artists and executives into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame,” said Joel Peresman, president and CEO of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation. “They truly represent the variety of people that have defined and continue to influence music and the business of Rock and Roll.”
The newest list of inductees was chosen based on the votes from members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation. Artists become eligible 25 years after releasing their first recording.
One notable missing was rock group Bon Jovi, of which Jon Bon Jovi was appointed to the White House Council for Community Solutions. Bon Jovi was formed in 1983 with their first number one album Slipper When Wet debuting in 1986. The album contained the first single “You Give Love a Bad Name”, “Livin’ on a Prayer” and “Wanted Dead or Alive.”
The 26th annual induction ceremony will take place at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City, but all inductees are eventually recognized with a presence at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland Ohio.
Cooper, 62, credited his Detroit roots with shaping his style and career longevity.
“I am so proud to say I’m from Detroit, but more than that — it’s where we belong,” he said. “When I heard bands like the Stooges, MC5 and Ted Nugent’s Amboy Dukes, we were among kindred spirits. It was a brotherhood. And outsiders, although they may take a step backward when they see us, they definitely respect Detroit artists.”
Waits said becoming part of the Hall of Fame had changed his perception of the honor.
“I never really cared about the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame,” Waits said, “but now I am surprised to discover how much I do care.”
